Muir sets new British 1500m indoors record

Laura Muir came home in a relatively-distant second at World Indoor Tour but her time of 3mins 59.58secs made her the first Briton to break the four-minute barrier; Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay breaks world record with first place

Laura Muir set a new British record

Laura Muir set a new British record but top billing went to Gudaf Tsegay as the Ethiopian broke the 1,500 metres world indoor record in France on Tuesday.
Tsegay took more than two seconds off Genzebe Dibaba’s old mark as she crossed the line in a time of three minutes 53.09 seconds at the World Indoor Tour meeting in Lievin.Muir came home in a relatively-distant second but her time of 3mins 59.58secs made her the first Briton to break the four-minute barrier.
Compatriot Melissa Courtney-Bryant finished third in a personal best time of 4:04.79.Jemma Reekie was triumphant in the 800m, winning in a time of 2:00.64. Keely Hodgkinson was fourth as she came home in 2:01.71.Elsewhere, Ethiopian Getnet Wale came within 0.31 seconds of the indoor 3,000m record that has stood for 23 years. Records nearly tumbled in the 60m hurdles, too, as Grant Holloway claimed the men’s 60m hurdles in just 7.32 seconds, to take him within 0.02 seconds of the world indoor record owned by Colin Jackson and set back in 1994.There was British success in the pole vault as Holly Bradshaw won with a score of 4.73m, while 800m runner Elliot Giles continued his positive start to 2021 with victory in a time of 1:45.49.

Buccaneers cleared for Super Bowl LV victory boat parade

Back in late September, the Tampa Bay Lightning celebrated their Stanley Cup championship with a socially distanced boat parade.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will follow in the Lightning’s footsteps after their Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
ESPN’s Jenna Laine reports that the Bucs’ boat parade will occur on Wednesday on the Hillsborough River along the downtown waterfront. Laine added the City of Tampa and the Buccaneers were finalizing details for the celebration as of late Tuesday afternoon.

The Buccaneers became the first team to ever play in a Super Bowl at its home stadium and win such a title game. However, the NFL capped attendance at Raymond James Stadium to 25,000 spectators because of concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
There were hopes among some fans that the Buccaneers could finish Wednesday’s festivities with one final team send-off at the stadium. However, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times wrote that officials are still deconstructing tents, barricades and other equipment necessary for the Super Bowl LV broadcast and may not be finished by Wednesday afternoon.
As what usually occurs with any Super Bowl champion team, Buccaneers players and coaches are expected to leave town for deserved vacations and breaks shortly after the boat parade.

Evander Holyfield Was Preparing to Bite Mike Tyson Back but Stopped for One Reason

Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson might appear good friends now as they plan to stage an exhibition trilogy in the coming days. However, their relationship began with a heated-rivalry that saw them drag each other into controversies. Following a win over Tyson in their first encounter, Holyfield agreed to a rematch but ended up losing a piece of his ear. The entire world saw the infamous bite fight happen as Mike Tyson bit off a piece Holyfield’s ear. However, Holyfield wanted to return the favour and desired to bite off Tyson’s face. In an interaction with Brian Custer, ‘The Real Deal’ opened up on the incident and said, “He (Mike Tyson) tipped the piece of my ear, a piece of it all. But at that time, I already forgave him because, in the ring, I would get ready. I am getting ready to bite him back. I am going to bite him back in the face and I will go right there. But you know my trainer was saying, keep your mind on the lord.” Read More | VIDEO: Philosopher Mike Tyson Analyzes the ‘Fragile Human Mind’ That said, Holyfield didn’t do the same and walked away after being bit. But Mike Tyson appeared to have lost his cool by then. The two got involved in a post-fight brawl, and the fight night ended on an unpleasant note. Nevertheless, Tyson and Holyfield cleared the differences between each other and built their friendship after retiring from boxing. Today, they are two of the prime heavyweight historians alive in the boxing community. After Tyson’s sensational return against Roy Jones Jr, Holyfield has demanded to face him for one last time. Meanwhile, several other pugilists have offered the same including Shannon Briggs. But Holyfield seems to advance the race. Although Tyson hasn’t responded to the offer, Holyfield has already passed a green signal from his end. He wants to bag the exhibition and awaits a response. New South Wales have confirmed Pat Cummins’ appointment as captain of their one-day team.
Cricket Australia has urged its state associations to give more leadership experience to potential future national captains.
Cummins, who served as Australia’s vice-captain throughout the summer, has long been earmarked as a potential contender to succeed Test skipper Tim Paine and white-ball captain Aaron Finch.
Cricket NSW has announced the express paceman, named man of the Test series after India’s triumph at the Gabba, will captain his state in the domestic one-day tournament.
Former Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill will remain skipper of the Blues’ Sheffield Shield team.
The rejigged one-day schedule has been announced, with Cummins’ first game in charge to be on Monday against Victoria at North Sydney Oval.
“We have no doubt he’ll prove to be a fantastic leader and I know he will also be a great role model for all Blues players,” NSW coach Phil Jaques said.
“Captaining NSW in these matches is a really good opportunity for Pat to not only demonstrate how good a leader he is.
“But it’s a chance to show he also has the tactical nous to be a really good captain.”

Cummins will then sit out NSW’s Shield clash with Victoria at the SCG, which starts on Wednesday.
Fellow Test quicks Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are doing the opposite; skipping next week’s one-day game before playing the red-ball match.
Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon are playing both games for NSW.
David Warner will be notably absent from both clashes as the opener continues to recover from the groin injury he played with during the SCG and Gabba Tests.

IND vs ENG | Don’t really think about records and achievements, states Ishant Sharma

Ishant Sharma, who entered the 300-wicket club, stated that he doesn’t really have his sights on records and achievements of overtaking Zaheer Khan, with the focus just on improving his game. Recalling his spell to Ricky Ponting, Ishant stated that his only aim was to pin him under pressure.Since debut, Ishant Sharma has become the sole and binder of the Indian bowling unit, after he took over the reins from Zaheer Khan. Ever since then, the pacer has been consistently threatening the batsmen with his bowling performances, combined with his height and length. However, there was a period that followed where he struggled to pick wickets, with his inconsistency over his line and length. Post the Jason Gillespie episode, the pacer has turned his career around, fast becoming one of the best pacers in the world. In the ongoing Test against England, the pacer picked up his 300th Test wicket, with the wicket of Daniel Lawrence, who was caught right in front. However, despite getting to the landmark, Ishant Sharma stated that he doesn’t really think about records or achievements. “I don’t really think about overtaking Zaheer Khan or anyone on the list of any record. I don’t think about all these records, just focusing on improving myself and my bowling efforts. Just want to enjoy my cricket and keep playing for India and helping the Indian team,” Ishant Sharma told Ravichandran Ashwin in a video posted by BCCI. Talking about the spell that he bowled to dismiss Ricky Ponting, the lanky pacer stressed the importance of bowling a lot of deliveries, outside the off-stump channel, consistently putting the batsman under the pump. He revealed that a piece of advice from Sachin Tendulkar was to be as patient as if the pacer was bowling in the country. “I have bowled plenty of spells (like the one I bowled against Ponting) in first-class cricket. What happens in first-class cricket is constantly you have to keep working hard to get a wicket. You have to keep bowling maidens to tie the batsman down and that’s what Sachin Tendulkar told me in Australia. He just wanted me to be as patient as I’m playing in India,” he added.Ishant also recalled his first-ever wicket in the longest format, with the pacer picking up Bangladesh all-rounder Mashrafe Mortaza as his first scalp in the Indian whites. “The first wicket was Mashrafe Mortaza in Bangladesh, it was my debut and there wasn’t much crowd there as well. Anil Bhai (Kumble) held the catch in the gully, that was my first wicket.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

“A fight closer to my natural weight”- Dustin Poirier appears to be interested in fighting Nate Diaz at welterweight

Nate Diaz has expressed interest in a fight against Dustin Poirier at welterweight. The former interim UFC lightweight champion seems to agree with Diaz’s statement and is willing to throw it down at 170.In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Diaz played down talks of him returning as a lightweight. The Stockton Slugger claimed that the 155 division is dead to him, and he already owns it.In response to Diaz’s interest in fighting Dustin Poirier at welterweight, The Diamond took to social media and seems to be on the same wavelength for a potential future fight between the pair.Poirier, who usually walks around at 170, wrote that a fight at his natural weight class would be great and something he remains interested in.A fight closer to my natural weight sounds like a great idea— The Diamond (@DustinPoirier) February 9, 2021Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier were initially scheduled to fight at UFC 230 at lightweight. However, the fight was eventually canceled, and Diaz wouldn’t fight in the UFC until 2019.In his return fight, Nate defeated Anthony Pettis and immediately called out Jorge Masvidal, who was in attendance. The UFC capitalized on the callout, with Dana White and his team booking Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal for UFC 244 for the BMF Championship.Nate Diaz hasn’t fought in the UFC in over a yearNate Diaz’s last UFC fight was against Jorge Masvidal. The UFC 244 main event ended via a controversial doctor’s stoppage, and Masvidal was declared the winner.Since that fight, there have been talks between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal for a rematch. However, a trilogy fight between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor also tends to remain a possibility.

As for Diaz’s personal preference, The West Coast Gangster remains interested in a showdown against either Charles Oliveira or Dustin Poirier at welterweight. With 2-4 fights on his mind for 2021, Nate could end up fighting The Diamond for his return bout later this year.If Diaz and Poirier are to join the stacked UFC welterweight division, things could get a lot more interesting for the 170-lbs division. However, Poirier’s move up to welterweight could create a different level of confusion at lightweight, especially with Khabib Nurmagomedov set to vacate the UFC lightweight title.

US safety board cites poor pilot decisions as likely cause of Kobe Bryant fatal crash

FILE PHOTO: A mural of late Kobe Bryant, who perished one year ago alongside his daughter and seven others when their helicopter crashed into a hillside, next to a gym in Los Angeles, California, U.S., January 26, 2021. REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni
WASHINGTON — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on Tuesday cited the pilot’s “poor decision making” as the probable cause of the January 2020 helicopter crash that killed retired NBA star Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others, saying the pilot became disoriented and did not follow rules for flying in cloudy weather.
The NTSB cited pilot Ara Zobayan’s “poor decision to fly in excess of airspeed.” It said the weather conditions were inconsistent with adverse weather training and resulted in the pilot’s “spatial disorientation and loss of control.”
The board also cited Zobayan’s “likely self-induced pressure” to complete the flight.
Zobayan told air traffic controllers that his helicopter was climbing out of heavy clouds when in fact it was descending, immediately before slamming into a hillside near the town of Calabasas in California, the agency said. Zobayan was among those killed in the crash of the Sikorsky S-76B helicopter outside Los Angeles in hilly terrain.
Bryant, 41, an 18-time National Basketball Association all-star with the Los Angeles Lakers, was traveling with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, two other girls and several friends to a youth basketball tournament at the time of the crash. The accident prompted an outpouring of shock and grief from sports fans worldwide.
The NTSB also cited the company operating the doomed helicopter, Island Express Helicopters, for “inadequate review and oversight of its safety management processes.” Lawyers for the company did not immediately comment.
The board said previously an examination of the helicopter’s engines and rotors found no evidence of catastrophic mechanical failure.
NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said Zobayan should not have flown into the clouds.
“Unfortunately, we continue to see these same issues influence poor decision making among otherwise experienced pilots in aviation crashes,” he said. “Had this pilot not succumbed to the pressures he placed on himself to continue the flight into adverse weather, it is likely this accident would not have happened.”
The NTSB urged the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to require simulator training to address “procedures needed to recognize and respond to changing weather conditions” and to convene a panel to address pilot disorientation. It also called on the FAA to require flight data recorders in all charter helicopters.
The FAA said it “takes NTSB recommendations very seriously” and said it was reviewing the feasibility of requiring all charter companies to install such recorders on their aircraft.

What even Eddie’s biggest haters must concede

I recall a story Eddie McGuire told me probably midway through his 23-year reign as Collingwood president. He was walking down a street with his two then-young sons when a group of youngsters, onboard a passing tram, began hurling abuse at him.It was all Collingwood related but at that moment, he wondered if the presidency was worth being belittled in front of his boys.History will show the club won out and his sons would go on to accept that their dad would, at times, cop flak. And copped flak he has. Some justified, some not.Eddie McGuire resigns as Collingwood president after a report into ‘systematic racism’ at the club. (The Age)He’s not naive enough to suggest he doesn’t bring some of it upon himself; a sometimes blinkered view of the game he loves so much polarising public opinion.Indeed, public opinion of McGuire is split in the wake of his resignation as Collingwood president. In truth, he was always going to struggle not to step down following the leaking of the independent report that found Collingwood guilty of systemic racism. The report included a veiled reference to Eddie’s apparent failings as an influential, if not THE influential, figure at the club. The situation was not helped by his now infamous, and now lethal, comment that it was a “proud” day for the club.McGuire went off script, prompting his detractors to go off tap.Eddie McGuire walks past premiership cups with his family, on their way to confirm his exit from Collingwood. (Getty)His opponents would’ve been high-fiving last night, celebrating the downfall of football’s highest-profile administrator. But outweighing that will be those equally furious that McGuire has, quite possibly, become a victim of those who thrive on being outraged. But even his most ardent detractors would have to concede that McGuire has done more for his club than any other president in the game’s history. Not just club, but community. The Magpies enjoy one of the most envied headquarters in Australian sport, right in the heart of the sporting precinct. It also has a premiership cup in the trophy cabinet, won on McGuire’s watch.Brick and mortar and silverware are very much part of his legacy, but so too are the many projects to help those in dire need of support. The homeless were found homes … the hungry were given food … the lonely were taken in as part of the Collingwood family. These weren’t photo opportunities for McGuire. Most of the work was done with not a camera in sight. So, as much as history will record his exit as a result of a racism issue that should’ve been dealt with much, much earlier, McGuire will also be remembered as a visionary.Eddie McGuire reigned over Collingwood for 23 years. (Getty)Many leaders are denied the dignity of exiting on their own terms and McGuire has clearly joined the list. He’ll be hurting. There’s no doubt about that.Nor should there be any doubt that when it’s weighed up, his achievements will far outweigh his failings. For a daily dose of the best of the breaking news and exclusive content from Wide World of Sports, subscribe to our newsletter by clicking here!
