Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the deal still has some hurdles to clear before being finalized and will reportedly also involve the New York Mets.
A trade that would send outfielder Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals is not complete, but the Red Sox, Royals and Mets are working through details on a three-way deal that is expected to be finalized, sources tell ESPN.

Benintendi was held to just 14 games in 2020 due to injury and struggled in his limited action. The 26-year-old hit just .103/.314/.128 with zero home runs and just one extra-base hit.
For his career, the former first-round draft pick has slashed .273/.353/.435.
This marks the second consecutive off-season in which Boston has dealt a key cog of its outfield. Superstar Mookie Betts was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the 2020 season and went on to win the World Series in his first year with the club.
