IPL 2021 | Kings XI Punjab change their name to Punjab Kings

Ahead of the 14th season of the Indian Premier League, the Kings XI Punjab franchise have changed their name to Punjab Kings and will be called by their new name in the upcoming IPL auction. The franchise is even considering a grand ‘re-launch’ with the new name in a couple of days in Mumbai.Kings XI Punjab have been a part of the Indian Premier League for 13 years now but barring 2014, when they reached the final, success has been elusive. They have been one of the most active traders as well as buyers in the auction window but that hasn’t materialized to success over the years. Now, they are set to change their name.Kings XI Punjab, from now on, will be known as Punjab Kings and a formal communication has been made to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Cricbuzz reported that the approval has also been obtained.Even though no owner or an official of the franchise has stated any reason behind the planned transformation few KXIP officials confirmed the name change, which is, in fact, used in a recent internal communication by the BCCI.The Mohit Burman-Preity Zinta-Ness Wadia-owned side is planning a grand ‘re-launch’ in a couple of days in Mumbai, ahead of the February 18 auction that will take place in Chennai. The KL Rahul-led franchise will turn up at the auction in Chennai as Punjab Kings.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Pitch is turning but only when you hit the right areas, insists Axar Patel

Axar Patel, who’s making his Test debut at the Chepauk, reckons that it’s a turning pitch but you have to nail the right areas to get the most out of it. He also added that the team’s confidence was greatly boosted by the partnership between Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin.

The venue of the first and second Test might be the same but not the nature of the deck as the pitch has been turning in the ongoing Test as opposed to the series opener, played on a relatively flat wicket. Despite the assistance from the wicket, there has been a lot of difference between the way both the team’s spinners have bowled. While Indian spinners have able to gain maximum out of a helpful track, the same hasn’t been the case with England duo of Moeen Ali and Jack Leach. Especially, Moeen has bowled quite a few full tosses pretty much like Dom Bess and at times both have lacked the penetration as shown by the Indian spinners. Axar Patel, who took two wickets today for India, also suggested the same and stated that one has to bowl in the right areas to reap rewards. “Like the way the wicket is behaving, it’s turning. But it only turns when you bowl the right length, the right pace. If you are a little slow, it doesn’t turn a lot. So if you hit the right pace and line, it becomes tough for them to bat. It becomes important for the bowlers to bowl the right pace,” Axar told reporters in a virtual presser at the end of day three. There have been a lot of talks around the nature of the wicket but the left-arm spinner asserted that players need to adapt just like Indians do on seaming wickets. “Actually if you look at my last dismissal (Root) one, it was down to the umpire, so I can’t say a lot on that. But here on this wicket, I think we played really well, so when we are able to score runs, they shouldn’t have issues. I think they (England) should change the mindset about the wicket because we also play on seaming wickets.”Notably, if not for injury, the Gujarat spinner would have played the first Test too, and he reckons it was frustrating for him to miss out earlier. Once the No.1 ODI bowler in the world, he also said that the wicket has suited his strength as he tries to bowl accurately. “I was about to play in the first Test, it was frustrating for me but I never got irritated by it. I just took some time and worked on my fitness, my physio told me that it was a niggle and it would become alright for the second Test. It was frustrating but if you look at it positively, I could give my 100% here. I have played with Ash a lot, his mindset and his bowling to both left and right-handed batsman. He talks a lot about mindset and how I could trouble the batsman with my bowling.”“The way I bowl, accuracy is my strength, it has worked well for me. It’s just that you have to be accurate, focused and keep bowling the same line and length. The wicket will take care of itself, you just have to keep bowling to your strength,” Axar said.Indian batting got off to shaky start and were at one position, 106 for 6 today but then Kohli and Ashwin combined in a big partnership with the former getting a fifty and the latter making an emphatic century that helped India to 286 runs. Axar remarked that the team’s confidence was boosted by the Kohli-Ash partnership and also how the team doesn’t pay much attention to the outside noise. “I think our team’s confidence was boosted by Ashwin’s knock. We had a lot of soft dismissals, the way Pujara got out. We were a bit nervous but the way Ashwin and Virat played, we had immense confidence and when there are runs on board, you tend to be more confident of your chances.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

Pakistan Tour of South Africa: Three CWC Super League ODIs and four T20Is in April

Follow Us On

Pakistan and South Africa have announced the schedule for the limited-overs series in April, comprising three ICC Cricket World Cup Super League ODIs and four T20Is.

The tour is scheduled to run from 02 April to 16 April 2021, with Pakistan arriving in South Africa on 26 March before the first game when they will enter a bio-secure environment (BSE) in Gauteng. They will go into a period of quarantine before commencing with inter-squad training.

Pakistan’s tour of South Africa was initially scheduled to comprise just three T20Is, but after a request from Cricket South Africa, the series will now comprise four T20Is, with the first two matches being played in Johannesburg, followed by two T20Is in Pretoria.

Before the T20Is get underway on 10 April, a three-match ODI series will be played between the sides from 2 April. A part of the Men’s CWC Super League, the first and third ODIs will be played in Pretoria, with Johannesburg hosting the second ODI on 4 April.

“We are delighted to finally confirm the dates and full schedule for Pakistan’s white-ball tour to South Africa,” commented CSA Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith.

“Pakistan has proved their status over the years as one of the most dangerous limited-overs teams and I’m sure they will give the Proteas a stern test on the Highveld. We will also have the much-anticipated ‘Betway Pink ODI’ take place during the tour and that is something further to look forward to for the players, the fans and all those associated with this iconic day,” he added.

“We are grateful to the PCB for agreeing to our request within a short period of time to increase the length of the trip by adding in a fourth T20, which will give us some much-needed additional international content,” he said.

PCB Director of International Cricket, Zakir Khan added, “We are delighted to help assist our fellow member countries in their plight to survive. We all have a collective responsibility to look after the game and its welfare together as ICC Members.”

“South Africa and Pakistan’s relationship is a long-standing and mutually valued one, and it was an easy decision for us to accommodate their request. We’re all looking forward to a successful tour,” he added.

Naman Ojha calls it a day from all formats of cricket

Former Indian wicket-keeper Naman Ojha has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Monday, bringing curtains down on a 20-year-long career. Ojha, who played for India in all three formats of the game, has the record of effecting most dismissals behind the stumps in Ranji Trophy. One of the most promising batsmen in the 2000s, even before MS Dhoni happened to Indian cricket, Naman Ojha had a stellar reputation as one of the finest glovesmen in the early stages of the decade. He continued to shine in domestic cricket when MS Dhoni became a legend of Indian cricket and the path converged pretty late. He made his mark in the 2008-09 Challenger Trophy before being picked by Rajasthan Royals and followed that up with the ODI debut against Zimbabwe in Harare. He also played T20s during that tour but a Test debut eluded for a long time. After a path-breaking 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season and a sensational A-tour of Australia, he was picked as a reserve wicket-keeper to Wriddhiman Saha for the 2014 England tour even though MS Dhoni was still the captain and wicket-keeper.Ojha eventually made his debut for the Indian Test side in the 2015 series against Sri Lanka in Colombo and effected five dismissals in Colombo. After Devendra Bundela’s retirement from the circuit, Ojha led Madhya Pradesh with spunk and authority and now ended up with 9753 runs, with 22 centuries and 55 half-centuries, at an average of 41.67 to go with 471 dismissals in first-class cricket. In his IPL career, he represented Delhi Daredevils, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad and his last appearance came in 2018 for SRH. Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

The Good, Bad, and Ugly ft. Cricket fans returning to stadiums, Fran Kirby and Wasim Jaffer

Welcome to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly segment of the week gone by where we review the sporting world and the stuff they offer. The last week was going really well till ‘many’ stories emerged and things got uglier. Please dive in as we take you on a stroll through the park. The GoodThe Scenes as fans return to Stadium in IndiaFinally, Cricket fans returned to the stadium, and what a glorious occasion it could be with a visiting team being 1-0 up in India in a Test series that would determine the WTC finalist. Of course, it had to be in Chennai in front of the Knowledgeable Chennai Crowd who traditionally stand up and applaud the good cricket on offer, no matter the allegiance. On Saturday, with only 50% crowd allowed to be at the venue, they really made a spectacle. The whistles were coming regularly and every single soul applauded Rohit Sharma returning back to the pavilion after playing the innings of his life. Chennai is known for that but the heart was content for seeing after what seemed like an era without the main stakeholders finding a glimpse of their favorite sport. Fran Kirby and a story of success and tragedyWatching Fran Kirby is pure joy. She does everything an attacking footballer does at her prime and radiates a stunning charisma and smile integral to her personality. That itself makes her a likable character on the football pitch but if you add the personal tragedy that she had to overcome in order to be where she is now, it makes for a compelling narrative. She missed most of the last season after contracting pericarditis which almost forced her into retirement at the age of 26. She was also diagnosed with clinical depression following the death of her mother and life had much more contrasting problems for her. Any mere mortal would’ve left the sport for good, but not Kirby. With an unflinching determination, she did make a comeback and on a roll this season for Chelsea. What a magnificent football story! The BadHugo Boumous abuses umpires to receive red-cardThe week that was glorious for sports on many counts, the bad made its mark. Mumbai City FC star Hugo Boumous is not known for his discipline, and that was on show once again when he abused match officials during their game against FC Goa last week. Boumous was shown a fourth yellow card in the fifth minute of the injury time for ‘delaying the start of play’ and immediately, he was seen abusing umpires on the field. He was shown a direct red card and taking stock of the situation, AIFF Disciplinary Committee issued a show-cause notice to the footballer. Even though that won’t affect Mumbai City FC that much as they are already through to the play-offs and have four matches before the semi-finals, his action doesn’t speak much better for the league.Ezra Moseley passes away in a road accidentSome horrific news came from Bridgetown this week as Ezra Moseley, former West Indies fast bowler, died in an accident aged 63. Those who haven’t seen him bowl might not understand the impact that Mosely had for the Windies in 1990 but that goes beyond history books and brought about a cultural manifestation. Despite being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back at the age of 24, he had a significant impact. After having lost the opening encounter in the absence of Viv Richards, Patrick Patterson, and Malcolm Marshall, Windies were staring at defeat at the hands of England, who were chasing 151 runs to claim a 2-0 series lead. Mosely he twice struck Gooch on the glove with rising deliveries – still one of the iconic photos of all-time – and helped Windies to a memorable and ultimately historic draw. Assistant coach for their Women’s team in the 2016 T20 World Cup in India, which they won, Mosely had a fantastic post-retirement career as well. His demise is a loss for the sport we all love.Communal allegations against Wasim JafferWasim Jaffer told me during the lockdown how fortunate he has been in his career for having people right on his side and being loved by everyone irrespective of their age. People from all corners have spoken about the decency of the man and how fortunate they were to know him and thus it seems absolutely ludicrous when communal allegations were levelled against him. It came to such a position that Jaffer had to do a point by point rebuttal in a press conference and yet very few came in support of him. When asked, Ajinkya Rahane said he didn’t have any idea of the incident, Sachin Tendulkar is yet to say one word about that and most of the active cricketers, sans Manoj Tiwary, made their support clear. It is a shame what we’re seeing at the moment. The third Umpiring blunder casts an ugly episode in ChennaiFirst thing first – the on-field umpiring has been excellent in this series so far. However, the same can’t be said about the third umpiring decisions on the opening day of the second Test in Chennai when Anil Chaudhary failed to follow the right procedure after a not-out decision against Ajinkya Rahane. In the 75th over of the day, Rahane prodded forward to a good-length ball of Jack Leach for which Virender Sharma turned down the appeal. When England reviewed it, Chaudhary only checked the UltraEdge and concluded that there was no contact at that moment. However, he failed to realize that the ball, after hitting the pad, in fact, hit Rahane’s gloves on the way to Ollie Pope. When England told the on-field umpire that they were in fact, checking for a catch, Chaudhary responded with an LBW review. It all happened in a spur and England had lost a review. When England team management took that up with match referee Javagal Srinath, he reinstated the review but Rahane batted on for a while. It created an outrage on Twitter and the umpires copped abuse for the same.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

Cricket Australia ready to pay out-of-pocket expenses to CSA after tour postponement

Cricket Australia, in a letter addressed to Cricket South Africa, have stated that the tour became untenable after advice from leading medical experts and added that they are ready to pay out-of-pocket expenses to the CSA. Recently, CSA wrote it to the ICC asking to intervene in the matter.Even though Cricket South Africa made all the arrangements that Cricket Australia asked and then some, including letting the entire Irene Country Lodge in Pretoria, where the Australians were to be based for Tests in Johannesburg and Centurion, the CA, in the eleventh hour, decided not to travel in the fag end of the Test series. CSA found the decision completely unjustifiable and even asked the ICC to intervene, after which CA Chairman Earl Eddings wrote a letter to his South African counterparts. In a letter directed to Cricket South Africa interim board chairman Dr Stavros Nicolaou, Eddings said his organisation shared “extreme disappointment” for having opted to postpone the three-Test series but the tour had become “untenable” due to the absence of a detailed biosecurity plan and the risk of a coronavirus infection.“Notwithstanding the additional measures that CSA sought to implement as discussions progressed, our medical experts determined that the residual risk of members of our touring party contracting COVID-19 remained at a level inconsistent with our duty of care, when taking into account the prevalence of COVID-19, the more contagious strain of COVID-19 first discovered in South Africa, restrictions relating to travel from and into Australia and the considerable challenges of repatriation to Australia of anyone who contracts COVID-19 while in South Africa (and their close contacts within the squad), including the requirement for all returning persons to present a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure,” Eddings wrote, reported Sydney Morning Herald.“We acknowledge that CSA considers it disappointing that the tour was postponed relatively late in discussions. I assure you that our teams were under instruction to do whatever they could to make the tour happen, hence our continuing to work intensively and in good faith on plans and bio-security protocols until recent days, when it eventually became clear that the residual risks were untenable.“As soon as this became clear, we let you know immediately as we were conscious that CSA would shortly start to commit to costs such as hotel deposits. As discussed with your interim CEO, we are willing to discuss contributing towards out-of-pocket expenses incurred in planning for the tour, noting that, like you, we have invested many hours of work, including hiring leading medical experts in an attempt to make the tour happen.”While the Sydney Morning Herald previously reported that the Australian board had no previous idea about how the players would be transported from O.R. Tambo international airport to Irene Country Lodge in Pretoria, the last straw came along. But a CSA spokesman has since refuted the claim, calling it disingenuous as every detail was already shared.“To imply they didn’t know how they would be travelling is disingenuous, at best. We already had the main driver and a reserve driver quarantining at Irene. CA even stipulated that they wanted four or five protective ‘layers’ between the players and the drivers, despite their 14 days quarantine,” the spokesman said.“The drivers would have to wear an inner mask, an outer mask, a visor and there would have to be Perspex shields installed between the players and the driver. The bus would be cleaned and sanitised to the highest standard every day. CA knew all of this …”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IPL 2021 Auction | Chennai Super Kings – Dream, realistic, wildcard and suggested buys

The dynasty has fallen and how! The invincible Super Kings went to the verge of demolition in the 2020 edition, a prized snapshot for millions of fans who despise CSK and its ridiculous dominance in the league. Can they roar back and quieten the detractors? The auction will lay the foundation. One thing that you always associate Chennai Super Kings with is MS Dhoni and his unfrazzled charisma to sail his team through troubled waters. He had done that time and again and when the franchise found themselves in a never-seen-before situation, with the absence of their talisman Suresh Raina, everyone’s hopes were pinned on him. However, T20 cricket is seldom won on reputation. The systematic imbalance in the side was way too radiant as Dhoni found himself in a cocoon of his outdated formula. CSK lost and lost and lost and it needed a Ruturaj Gaikwad special towards the fag end of the tournament to slide the wooden spoon tag.Does 2021 promise better? From the retention/release date, it seems like CSK will approach the auction with a bit of pragmatism and conservatism – a hallmark of the side – yet the fact that a lot of dreck is out of the place, we might see an interesting auction from the Men draped in Yellow. The Missing LinksShane Watson is gone, but Robin Uthappa has joined the cathedral. CSK are still sorted in terms of spinners but every single one of them turns the ball away from the right-hander. Given CSK have released Harbhajan Singh from the roster, the hammer is set to be tight in search of an offie. Further, can the side carry on without a power-hitter, especially because that was one area where they struggled big-time last year? Kedar Jadhav’s release allows the side to look for that one option who can be effective down the order or perhaps be a replacement for an injury-prone Dwayne Bravo. The Dream Signing(s) – Alex Hales/Shivam DubeEven though CSK got them covered with the trade deal of Robin Uthappa, there is no harm in going for an overseas opener who gives an attacking edge to the side. Especially with the absence of Shane Watson, it will be great if they can swoop in Alex Hales for their remaining one overseas spot. Hales not only provides a brilliant power-hitting option at the top, something MS Dhoni admitted was their Achilles Heel last year, but also allows the middle-order to retain their originality. Plus, the search for a power-hitter is never more prudent. CSK hoped Kedar Jadhav to do the job last year but he was strangely reticent in his approach and that might push the three-time champions to go for someone like Shivam Dube, a solid all-round option and doesn’t even take a crucial overseas spot. If the franchise can manage to buy any of the two, it will definitely be a dream addition.Shahrukh Khan, Naam to Suna hi Hoga! An absolute beast for Tamil Nadu in the last couple of years, Shahrukh Khan has really grown in stature as a finisher and that was in show in the recently-concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Batted only four times, but remained not out in three of them, and none of it with an SR less than 180. It says something about his astonishing ability – something the Men in Yellow could be benefitted from. If they wish for a like-for-like replacement to Bravo, whose propensity to injuries made him a volatile figure in the CSK side, then Chris Morris is also not a bad option either. Morris was decent for RCB last year and after the side released him into the market, you could really trust CSK going for the man who had played for them in the past. The Wildcards – Liam Livingstone/ Steve SmithAfter the kind of BBL Liam Livingstone, one of the most complete T20 cricketers currently, had, one would be hard-pressed to imagine him without a gig this year. He chose to stay away from the auction last time to focus his energy on the County Cricket for a possible English Test return which didn’t materialize but guess what, he can actually set the IPL stage on fire. Possibly, Stephen Fleming has already made a note of his BBL returns as well as his mixture of off-break and leg-break even though people least expect him to join CSK. Steve Smith is another option that the Chennai-based franchise might look forward to, as the Australian’s dynamic approach might be sustainable. What works further is that MS Dhoni understands Steve Smith really well thanks to his stint with Rising Pune Supergiant(s) and the duo shared a fantastic partnership as far as leadership is concerned, with Dhoni sharing his tips with Smith in every possible opportunity. Won’t be a bad option either, looking at the existing top-order. SportsCafe Suggests – Tom Curran/K GowthamSam Curran was great for CSK last year – so why don’t CSK add another Curran to the jungle? Well, jokes aside, Tom Curran brings in a complete all-round package just like his younger brother and can be suitable to their needs in dire situations. Curran might have conceded way too many runs for Rajasthan Royals last year but the fact that bowlers tend to do well under MS Dhoni’s guidance can be a propelling factor. And one shouldn’t forget the kind of impact he had on death in the T20 cricket over the years. On the other hand, remember Krishnappa Gowtham – one of the hardest hitters of the cricket ball in the country and more than a handy off-spinner. It is a mystery why the Royals decided to release him to the pool when he didn’t cost much, thus stay his addition to the CSK group can be an effective exercise. Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | England need ‘something amazing’ to avoid defeat against India, believes Graham Thorpe

England batting coach Graham Thorpe has stated that the visitors need to bat extremely well and something amazing must happen for them to avoid a sure loss from a rampant Indian side. Thorpe has further added that they were naturally disappointed with the deficit in the game after two days.England suffered a major collapse in the first innings after India posted a competitive total of 329 runs and even though they just managed to get past the follow-on mark, the eventuality was all too familiar for a team that had lost only two Test matches at home in the last nine years. With India now looking to stretch their lead, which currently stands at a brilliant 249, things look ominous for England. Batting coach Graham Thorpe admitted the same and asserted that England need ‘something amazing’ to avoid defeat against India in the second Test in Chennai. “You’d say we need something very special to happen tomorrow for us and for somebody to do something amazing with that bat. We’re naturally disappointed with the deficit in the game after two days, but it’s important we don’t allow ourselves to get too down about it,” Thorpe said in the virtual press conference from Chennai.”The most important thing is our dressing-room doesn’t get too affected by today. We’ve got some players in our team touring this part of the world for the first time against a very strong Indian side. Just as last week when we won the first Test match and we had to work extremely hard for it, here we know we have to stand up and keep learning as well.”England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, who replaced Jos Buttler for the second Test, was a treat to watch behind the stumps and staying true to the reputation, he batted as a man possessed. However, he didn’t find required support from the other end, resulting in a pretty dire situation and Thorpe admitted that a little bit of support here and there would’ve made things a lot easier.”I thought Ben Foakes played very well, but we’d lost early wickets and that really set us back. We didn’t get the partnerships going – the guys had plans, but they didn’t happen for us.”There were some good deliveries in there, some unfortunate dismissals and some good catches as well. We knew we were going to have some tough days here and it’s incredibly challenging on that surface.”Even in the first Test, we believed it was a good toss to win and this one was just as important. Pitches deteriorate as the game goes on and this one has gone a little bit quicker,” he added.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .
