Eagles could have a deadline for Carson Wentz trade

But a Wentz deal may not get done in February and there is one reason why that is the case.If there is a Wentz trade, the drop dead date isn’t for another 5 weeks when Carson is owed a $10M bonus. Could something happen sooner? Maybe, but there is no hurry. If Philly really wants to deal, they will wait until they get what they feel is a good offer— Greg Gabriel (@greggabe) February 11, 2021Carson Wentz trade: Eagles can be patient, but not too patientWentz is owed a $10 million roster bonus on March 19. That is your deadline right there. The Eagles can now sit back and take in every offer to see what they can get in return. There is truly no reason to rush, but they must also avoid waiting too long and getting stuck with Wentz if teams don’t want to wait on a decision and pull their offers.Matthew Stafford getting traded opened the floodgates and the quarterback market is running wild this offseason. Wentz may be the next on the move and all eyes remain on Deshaun Watson as well. The return for Wentz is tricky because a team is taking on a max contract. We saw the reverse of this in the Stafford deal as the Los Angeles Rams reportedly tossed in an extra first-round pick for the Detroit Lions to take Jared Goff’s contract. The Eagles are in the position of leverage here, but a high pick may be taken out of deals because of Wentz’s money.Having a firm deadline should help the Eagles as it could potentially force teams to panic if they don’t want to miss out on landing Wentz. There is also a possibility of the team keeping Wentz in 2021. Where Wentz is on March 19 should be the final say on his 2021 fate.

Eagles ‘losing leverage’ in Carson Wentz trade talks?

The Philadelphia Eagles may not be as close as some thought late last week to trading wantaway quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts or any other team.
On Tuesday afternoon, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio poured cold water over rumors linking Wentz with the Chicago Bears, which seemingly would leave only the Colts in the running for Wentz’s services, per previous reports.
Wentz may want to reunite with current Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich, his former offensive coordinator with the Eagles, and former Eagles quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Press Taylor, who joined the Colts on Tuesday. That shouldn’t leave Philadelphia in a hurry to accept pennies on the dollar for a one-time Most Valuable Player candidate who just finished his fifth NFL season.

However, the Colts don’t need to get this deal done immediately following the retirement of longtime veteran Philip Rivers. The new league year doesn’t officially open until March 17, and it doesn’t appear other clubs are knocking Philadelphia’s door down to trade for Wentz ahead of Valentine’s Day.
Of the three teams mentioned, the Eagles are in the weakest position for negotiations since both Chicago and Indianapolis could look toward so-called “bridge quarterbacks” for the 2021 season. This would leave the Eagles stuck with Wentz and his massive contract for another year, something both the Bears and Colts could use to their advantage in potential discussions.

Eagles looking for ‘Matthew Stafford type package’ in Carson Wentz trade

The Philadelphia Eagles could be ready to move off of Carson Wentz for good in the coming weeks. New Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni opened his press conference by stating how having two quarterbacks who could both start was a “good problem” for the Eagles entering the 2021 NFL offseason.“We have two quarterbacks in Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts that are top-notch quarterbacks. A lot of teams don’t have any,” Sirianni told reporters earlier this offseason. “So just really excited to work with both of them.”However, that question might already be answered for him as soon as Saturday evening.Wentz could be moved as early as next week from the Eagles, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen after a fallout during this season. Among the teams interested are the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts.Eagles are expected to trade Carson Wentz in the coming days in what would be the latest blockbuster QB deal to rock the NFL, sources tell @mortreport and me. The most pertinent questions now become where, when and for what. But it could happen as early as this week.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 6, 2021Wentz, 27, is coming off his fifth NFL season in which he was benched toward the end of the year in favor the 2020 second-round pick. The year was a career-worst for the former No. 2 overall pick back in 2016, in which he threw a career-high in interceptions (15) and sacks taken (50).How much is Wentz actually worth?Entering the offseason, Wentz’s contract was deemed untradable by many. Instead, all that changed when the Detroit Lions traded Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams last week, receiving two first-round picks, a third-round pick and former franchise star Jared Goff.Coincidentally enough, Goff was taken one pick before Wentz back in 2016.According to Schefter, the Eagles are looking for “a Matthew Stafford package” in return for Wentz. That would mean at least one first-round selection would need to be in the deal, as would a mid-round selection former standout of the 2017 NFL season.Of the two teams mentioned, Indianapolis could be more inclined to part ways with its first-round selection. The Colts won’t be losing much this offseason after finishing 11-5 in the race for the AFC playoffs. However, the team felt limited due to their overall quarterback play from the 38-year-old Philip Rivers.Rivers, who signed a one-year, $25 million deal this offseason to join the Colts, retired following the team’s Wild Card loss to the Buffalo Bills. Should Indianapolis traded for Wentz’s services, they would be on the hook for guaranteed cap charges of $25.4 million in 2021 and $22 million in 2022.If the Bears actually trade anything of significance for Carson Wentz, I might stay in Tampa, buy a house boat, and just let myself drift out to sea.— Robert Mays (@robertmays) February 5, 2021Sirianni, who served as the Colts’ offensive coordinator under former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich, has been noncommittal that Wentz would be the incumbent starter for Philadelphia in 2021. And after the Nick Foles fiasco over 2017 and 2018, it seems like the breakup was inevitable.A fun stat crossed Twitter earlier this week. Of the 22 quarterbacks drafted from 2009-16, only one remains on the team that drafted them. That’s Wentz. That stat is now a moot point, should this report be finalized before the start of the 2021 season.

Eagles: 3 teams that should trade for Carson Wentz

Bill Belichick, New England Patriots. (Mandatory Credit: Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports)Carson Wentz could be on the move from the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. After five years in the City of Brotherly Love, quarterback Carson Wentz has fallen out of favor with the Philadelphia Eagles.Wentz has not been the same player since tearing his ACL during his near-MVP season in 2017. Philadelphia went on to win Super Bowl 52 that February with his backup Nick Foles leading the Eagles to the promised land. Even with new head coach Nick Sirianni coming in to replace Doug Pederson, there is a chance Wentz has played his last snap for the team that drafted him No. 2.Three trade destinations for Carson Wentz 3 New England Patriots AFC East This is how the Evil Empire gets a second life after 20 years of dominanceThere is a chance Wentz could join the team his Eagles beat in Super Bowl 52 two years ago. Yes, the New England Patriots are very much in play to trade for him. While they could roll with Cam Newton as their starting quarterback for another season, he did not show enough that he can lead a so-so offensive rosters to the playoffs. Trading for Wentz could be a long-term upgrade here. The idea is Wentz is still in his 20s with at least a decade left of high-quality ball in the tank. Trading for him would be a means for the Patriots to reset in an attempt to keep their fleeting dynasty alive. New England is clearly the loser in the Tom Brady divorce, as its former starting quarterback is leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl in his age-43 season.Wentz has shown he can quarterback a not-so-stellar offensive roster to postseason berths. While no team in the NFC East is as menacing as the Buffalo Bills are in the AFC East, the Patriots would no longer be operating at a relative quarterbacking disadvantage. The curious part in all of this is if Wentz can buy into The Patriot Way or be a fit in Josh McDaniels’ offensive system. What is an advantage for the Patriots over other teams who could be in the market to trade for Wentz is that he plays in the opposite conference. Trading Wentz to another NFC team could totally blow up in the Eagles’ face if it turns out they were the problem in all of this. However, there are two better suitors for him than the Patriots. They are a distant third to possibly land him.

Eagles ‘close’ to trading QB Carson Wentz?

On Friday morning, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Philadelphia Eagles have discussed trading alleged wantaway quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts.
Such talk is only going to heat up as Super Bowl LV approaches.
Les Bowen and Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer have since reported that the Eagles are “close” to trading Wentz, the 28-year-old signal-caller who fell beneath rookie Jalen Hurts on the depth chart during the 2020 season. Wentz continues to be linked with the Colts and current Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich, his former offensive coordinator with the Eagles.

Bowen and McLane noted that Reich is expected to hire former Eagles quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Press Taylor, who reportedly is close with Wentz after the pair worked together for multiple years.
A trade likely benefits all parties in this scenario. Longtime veteran Philip Rivers recently retired and left the Colts without a proven starter, and it’s understandable Wentz would crave reunions with Reich and Taylor and also a fresh start that wouldn’t involve competing for a job with a younger prospect who built favor with teammates during the second half of this past campaign.
Bowen and McLane added that “Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has placed a high asking price on Wentz,” but it’s unknown if Roseman will receive anything close to his desired value for a player who has made it clear he wants out this offseason.

What is a realistic trade return for Carson Wentz?

There is reported trade interest in Carson Wentz and the Eagles can now dictate the market in order to land a nice return. The Philadelphia Eagles are dealing with a quarterback controversy even after firing Doug Pederson. Carson Wentz is reportedly unhappy and Jalen Hurts is sitting behind him wondering if he is going to be the starter in 2021.The quarterback trade market got off to a roaring start when the Detroit Lions traded Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Goff and several top picks. Goff, like Wentz, has a contract that is tough to move.So what would a realistic return be for the Eagles if they convince a team to take on Wentz’s money?NFL Rumors: What could Eagles get for Carson Wentz? The Stafford deal is an interesting case because it is not like Goff was the sought after one in the trade. So barring a blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson, Wentz is going to be the key piece in any trade involving him.Wentz remains under contract through the 2024 season and has a tough deal to move. That is good news for any team seeking a deal as it drives the asking price down a bit.The starting point for any team will be a minimum of two first-round picks. Wentz’s contract and the fact he appeared to regress and ultimately got benched last season will limit a team from mortgaging too much of their future.A realistic return would likely also include at least one proven starter, but not necessarily a quarterback. Landing a starting receiver would instantly provide Jalen Hurts with a much-needed weapon, given he becomes the starter in Wentz’s absence.Such a deal would also likely include a package of lower draft picks as well. The Rams sent a third-round pick to the Lions, so something like that or even two fourth-round picks makes sense with the Eagles. At this point in time Wentz has done nothing to warrant a massive haul. The fact the Eagles may want to take a huge dead cap hit to move him tells the whole story and other teams can take advantage of the situation. But the Eagles still don’t need to trade Wentz. That is in their favor as they can listen to offers and be patient. One thing to note is that the quarterback is owed a $10 million roster bonus in mid-March, so if he isn’t traded by then it would be a shock if he got moved. The Eagles may still want to repair the relationship with Wentz. But if they can find a team to take his contract, that will be tough to pass up.

Report: Eagles have received ‘aggressive offers’ for Carson Wentz

Carson Wentz had the worst season of his career in 2020, but it sounds like there are still multiple teams around the NFL that believe he can be a franchise quarterback.
Multiple reports have indicated that the Philadelphia Eagles remain open to trading Wentz. According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, the Eagles have received some “aggressive offers” for the former No. 2 overall pick.
Asking price is viewed as the biggest obstacle in a potential Wentz trade, so that is significant. The Eagles will have to absorb a salary cap hit of more than $30 million if they trade Wentz, which is one of the reasons they want a significant return.

The Indianapolis Colts are viewed as one of the most logical suitors for Wentz. They need a starting after Philip Rivers retired, and head coach Frank Reich is familiar with Wentz from the time he spent as the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia.
New Eagles coach Nick Sirianni last week would not commit to Wentz remaining with the team in 2021. That was noteworthy considering the team reportedly went to bat for Wentz when interviewing head coaching candidates.
For what it’s worth, one of the most respected NFL insiders in the business believes Wentz will be traded this offseason.

Report: Eagles, Colts have discussed Carson Wentz trade

The market for Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback Carson Wentz is reportedly heating up. The Indianapolis Colts, who desperately need a QB after Philip Rivers announced his retirement, are reportedly considering a move for the struggling Eagles signal-caller.
Speaking on SportsRadio 94WIP, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo said that the Eagles have already discussed a Wentz trade with the Colts.
“I do know that the Eagles have had conversations with the Indianapolis Colts already. Here is the thing about the Colts, and this is why they were never strongly in the running for Matthew Stafford — these guys are really good at what they do draft-wise. They believe in themselves. So every pick that they deal away they think to themselves ‘I just dumped away a good player’, where as some GMs might say ‘Eh, you know what, I may have missed on that pick anyway.’ These guys believe they are going to hit on every single one. So what they do is, they are a little slow playing when it comes to these draft picks and trades.”

Wentz has strong ties to the Colts, believe it or not. Indy head coach Frank Reich used to be Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator and the Colts are reportedly hiring Press Taylor, who has been Wentz’s QB coach the past few seasons.
Since Reich left for Indy, the Eagles have struggled offensively. Wentz had the worst season of his career in 2020, leading the NFL in interceptions and sacks. A reunion with Reich could help put him back on the path to success.
However, the Colts have some competition for the 28-year-old. According to Garafolo, the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers might all show interest in Wentz this offseason.
