Bucs nearly cut Leonard Fournette until Antonio Brown stepped in

TAMPA, FLORIDA – FEBRUARY 07: Leonard Fournette #28 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers runs for a 27 yard touchdown in the third quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium on February 07, 2021 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images)NBA Trade Rumors: Cavaliers engaged in ‘active talks’ with Raptors about Andre Drummond move by John Buhler Antonio Brown might have been a bigger role in the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl run than pundits care to admit. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a force that wasn’t slowing down heading into the postseason. A 4-0 run culminating in a 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Bucs finished the year on top for the first time since 2003.One of the biggest reasons for Tampa Bay’s success was its ability to build a running game. Thus enter the legend of Leonard “Playoff Lenny” Fournette. And thanks to his consistent play in the postseason, Tampa Bay will be able to celebrate all offseason. What’s crazy about Fournette’s situation is that it almost never happened. Without the help of Antonio Brown, perhaps the former Jacksonville running back would’ve been out of a job.According to a story from the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud, Fournette would have been cut if not for Brown.Brown to the rescue for Fournette?Fournette was listed as inactive in the team’s Week 14 26-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. For the next week, he spent time on the practice squad, working with the scout team offense rather than getting first-team reps. With Ronald Jones suffering a quad injury prior to Wild Card Weekend, Arians called upon Fournette to play the next man up role. He exceeded those expectations, tallying 448 total yards of offense and four touchdowns and the postseason. His 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter of Super Bowl LV gave Tampa Bay a 28-9 lead. Tampa would go on to win 31-9, holding Patrick Mahomes out of the end zone for the entire game.Playoff Lenny became an icon and a fan favorite due to his epic comeback story. His lasting memory of the 2020 postseason concluded when he found the end zone for the fourth time in four games. After being called a bust in Jacksonville, his revival proved that anyone can rewrite their own story.

Randy Moss: Career retrospective

Randy Moss was such a force he got us to pay attention to a small college in West Virginia. He was dominant from the second he stepped onto an NFL field. While there is no good argument against Jerry Rice as the best receiver of all-time, when you are talking about who is second on that list, Moss is right there in the running. Let’s take a look back at the career of Moss, from those troubled early college days up through him becoming a TV personality and everything in between.

Legal issues cause problems despite incredible high school career

Robert Laberge/Allsport/Getty Images

Despite playing his high school ball in West Virginia, Moss was a nationally-known prospect. All the big schools wanted him, and Moss decided to go to Notre Dame, which was his dream. Lou Holtz called Moss the best high school player he had ever seen. However, while still in high school Moss was involved in a fight with a fellow student, purportedly over racist language being used. Moss pled guilty to two counts of misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He was also expelled from high school and had his offer from Notre Dame rescinded.

Moss redshirts at Florida State, but more issues arise

Simon Bruty/Anychance/Getty Images

With the Irish off the table, Moss decided to go to Florida State, which wasn’t scared off by his legal issues. Moss was required to redshirt during his freshman year, but he would never suit up for the Seminoles. A positive marijuana test got Moss 60 more days in jail, but also got him booted from Florida State as well.

Randy lands at Marshall

Simon Bruty/Anychance/Getty Images

Wanting to play right away, Moss decided to return to his home state to play for the Marshall Thundering Herd. Marshall was still a Division I-AA (now FCS) school, which meant Moss would be able to play immediately in the 1996 season without having to sit out another year.

Moss dominates at the I-AA level

Moss immediately showed why schools like Notre Dame and Florida State wanted him. As a redshirt freshman, Moss set I-AA records left and right. He finished with a freshman record of 1,709 yards on 78 catches, a record that still stands. Randy also had 28 touchdown receptions, which tied Jerry Rice’s record. Marshall went undefeated and won the I-AA title. Naturally, Moss had four touchdowns in the championship game.

Marshall moves to Division I-A, but Moss still dominates

Robert Laberge/Allsport/Getty Images

The 1996 season would be Marshall’s final year at the I-AA level. In 1997, they moved up to Division I-A (now the FBS) and joined the MAC. The move did not deter Moss or the Thundering Herd. Marshall won the MAC title in its first year in the division, and Moss was an All-American thanks to 96 catches for 1,820 yards and 26 touchdowns in 13 games. Despite playing for a small school new to I-A football, Moss was a Heisman finalist alongside Peyton Manning, Ryan Leaf, and winner Charles Woodson.

Off-field issues cause Moss to drop in the Draft

Joseph Patronite/Getty Images

After only two seasons of college ball, Moss declared for the NFL Draft. He was clearly the most-talented receiver available, but there were concerns about his past. Not many NFL prospects have jail time and two program dismissals to their name, after all. These questions caused Moss’ stock to drop until the Minnesota Vikings took a chance and selected Randy with the 21st pick. They would be happy about that.

A rookie season for the ages

Mark Brettingen/Getty Images

Playing alongside Cris Carter, and with Randall Cunningham under center, the Minnesota Vikings went 15-1 in 1998 and set a record for the most points scored in a season. Moss was a big reason for that. He had 69 catches for 1,313 yards and 17 touchdowns, with that last number being a rookie record. Unsurprisingly, Moss was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year and made a Pro Bowl.

Two more Pro Bowl appearances

Mark Brettingen/Getty Images

The next couple of seasons were more of the same from Moss, even when the team moved from Randall Cunningham to Daunte Culpepper under center. Moss went over 1,400 yards in 1999 and 2000 with double-digit touchdowns both times. He was a Pro Bowler both of those years and was the Pro Bowl MVP in 1999 thanks to nine catches for a record 212 yards.

The Randy Ratio meets the Randy Rules

Mitchell Layton/Getty Images

In 2002, Dennis Green was replaced by Mike Tice as head coach. Tice decided the number-one thing he needed to do was get Moss the ball. It became known as the “Randy Ratio,” and it involved Tice trying to get at least 40 percent of Minnesota’s passes going in Moss’ direction. Meanwhile, defenses responded with what became known as the “Randy Rules,” which involved jamming Moss at the line of scrimmage and doubling him with a safety on basically every route. While Moss finished with 106 catches, he only had seven touchdowns, and the “Randy Ratio” was abandoned halfway through the 2002 season, when the Vikings went 6-10.

Moss is traded to Oakland

Kirby Lee/NFLPhotoLibrary

The 2003 season in Minnesota went quite well for Moss (career-high 111 receptions) but in 2004 he set then-personal lows and failed to hit 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. Also, he pretended to moon the Packers’ fans and Joe Buck freaked out.  After that down 2004 campaign, Moss was traded to the Oakland Raiders for linebacker Napoleon Harris and the seventh-overall pick in 2005, which they spent on…receiver Troy Williamson.

The lost years with the Raiders

Robert B. Stanton/NFLPhotoLibrary

Moss’ first season in silver-and-black went reasonably well, as he had 60 catches for 1,005 yards and eight touchdowns. However, in his second season, he had a mere 42 catches for 553 yards and only three touchdowns. Moss was unhappy during that second year. We know this because he kept saying he was unhappy and that he wanted to move on from the team.

Randy is traded to the Patriots

Rob Tringali/Sportschrome/Getty Images

Fed up with Moss, and watching his numbers drop, the Raiders were willing to trade the already-legendary receiver away. Oakland agreed to deal Moss to New England for a mere fourth-round pick. Hey, he was coming off a year with only 553 yards. Maybe he was washed up, right?

The record-breaking 2007 season

Rob Tringali/Sportschrome/Getty Images

Not so much. Moving to New England and playing with Tom Brady gave Moss the motivation he was looking for. You remember the 2007 season. The Patriots set a record for the most points ever in a season, breaking the record set by Moss’s 1998 team the Vikings. New England also went 16-0 during the record season and came within one victory of an undefeated season. The Pats fell short, but Moss had 23 touchdown receptions that year, an NFL record that still stands.

Two more successful seasons in New England

Rob Tringali/Sportschrome/Getty Images

Moss would spend two more seasons with the Patriots, both of which went well. In fact, he had 69 catches for 1,008 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2008 even though an injury to Brady left Matt Cassel as the quarterback. In 2009 Brady came back, and Moss’s numbers were even better.

A return to Minnesota doesn’t go well

Rob Tringali/SportsChrome/Getty Images

Staying content was never Moss’ thing. Despite the success in New England, Moss said that he felt unwanted heading into the 2010 season. After four games and nine catches, the Patriots traded Randy back to the Vikings for a third-round pick. The reunion didn’t go as either side hoped. After a few weeks back in Minnesota, Moss was criticizing his teammates and telling the Vikings’ owner that head coach Brad Childress should be fired. For his malcontented behavior, Moss was waived after four games.

Moss moves to the Titans (remember that?)

Bob Levey/Getty Images

Randy had been on two teams already, but there was still plenty of time left in the 2010 season. Moss was claimed off waivers by the Tennessee Titans, the only team to submit a claim for him. He played eight games for the Titans, but only had six catches for 80 yards. Tennessee passed on signing Moss after finishing the season.

Randy retires, but comes back with the 49ers

Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

Lacking any interest heading into the 2011 season, Moss decided to retire. However, the itch to play would be too strong. Randy announced he played to return for the 2012 season, and he managed to get the 49ers to agree to sign him to a one-year contract.

Moss retires for good this time

Scott Halleran/Getty Images

Moss was not a key figure on the 2012 49ers squad. He was only in the starting lineup for two games and mostly served as a depth receiver. In the end, Randy had 28 catches for 434 yards and three touchdowns. When the 2012 campaign ended, Moss retired, and this time it stuck.

Randy Moss Motorsports

John Sommers II/Getty Images

Moss had interests outside of football. In high school, he was a stellar basketball player and track athlete. However, he also had an interest in auto racing. In 2008, Moss launched Randy Moss Motorsports and bought a 50 percent share of the Morgan-Dollar Motorsports team on NASCAR’s truck racing circuit. However, the team would be shut down in 2012.

Moss becomes a TV analyst

Jennifer Stewart/Getty Images

Moss was never shy about talking when he played, so the move to being a talking head made sense. He got his first taste of it soon after leaving the Niners, joining Fox Sports 1’s “Fox Football Daily” show. However, it’s in 2016 when he would begin his ascent after joining ESPN. Moss is now a member of the “Sunday NFL Countdown” team, ESPN’s premier NFL show.

Randy is enshrined in the Hall of Fame

Joe Robbins/Getty Images

In 2018, the inevitable happened when Moss was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The next year, Moss would get another career-capping acknowledgment. In 2019, Randy was named as a member of the NFL’s All-Time Team for its 100th anniversary.

22 of 22
A dominant physical force and an equally dominant force of personality

Rob Tringali/Sportschrome/Getty Images

Few players mixed speed and size quite like Moss. He had maybe the best rookie season of any receiver, and also perhaps the top season ever when he had 23 receiving touchdowns for the 2007 New England Patriots. Moss made six Pro Bowls and four All-Pro teams, and he’s in the top 10 in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. In fact, as of right now he is second to only Rice in touchdowns. Sure, he was outspoken, and he wore out his welcome time and time again. In the end, the talent usually won out. Moss is in the running for being the second-best receiver of all-time (even though he said that he’s better than Rice).

Five potential landing spots for three-time DPOY J.J. Watt

The Houston Texans released five-time All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt on Friday at his request. Now the biggest question surrounding the 31-year-old is where he’ll play in 2021.
Watt has made it known in the past that he wants to play for a Super Bowl contender considering his time in the NFL is winding down and he has never won a championship.
With that in mind, here are the five most likely landing spots for Watt, per BetOnline.ag.Pittsburgh Steelers +150

The Pittsburgh Steelers are an obvious choice for Watt. His younger brothers T.J. and Derek Watt, both play for Mike Tomlin. Last season, the Watts became the first trio of brothers to play in the same NFL game. All of them spoke about the significance of that, which led to speculation that J.J. might want to join his brothers in the Steel City.
However, the Steelers have some cap space issues that they need to work out. As it stands, the roster is projected to be over the salary cap next season, with veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger delivering a $41.25 million blow to the team’s cap space in 2021. Roethlisberger said he’ll restructure his contract, but that certainly won’t be enough by itself to allow Pittsburgh to sign the oldest Watt brother.
On top of the cap issues, the Steelers already have two solid defensive linemen in Stephon Tuitt and Cameron Heyward. Tuitt, who registered a career-high 11 sacks in 2020, is under contract through the 2022 season. Heyward, a four-time Pro Bowler, is under contract through the 2024 season. However, he does have an out after the 2022 campaign.

Again, the Steelers don’t have much cap space, but the retirements of Vance McDonald and Maurkice Pouncey give Pittsburgh some wiggle room if it wants to make something happen. Tampa Bay Buccaneers +200
Watt is in pursuit of a Super Bowl title. What better place to make that happen than Tampa Bay? Tom Brady proved that he can still compete with the best players in the league by leading the Buccaneers to a 31-9 win in Super Bowl LV over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
If he were to sign with the Bucs, Watt would join a defense that includes Devin White and Jason Pierre-Paul, with free agents Lavonte David and Shaquil Barrett players Tampa hopes to retain. He’d be a solid addition to a defense that didn’t allow the Chiefs to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl.
While a deal would make sense for both sides, Tampa’s priority is to re-sign several free agents. However, it would be pretty difficult for Bucs general manager Jason Licht and head coach Bruce Arians to pass on Watt if he comes knocking on their door.Green Bay Packers +500

Watt is a native of Wisconsin, so it’s hard to imagine he’d pass up an opportunity to return home and play alongside Aaron Rodgers. The Packers are more enticing because they’ve played in the last two NFC Championship Games and are seemingly on the verge of returning to the Super Bowl.
Green Bay could also use help at defensive end. Watt would easily replace either Dean Lowry or Tyler Lancaster and become one of the Packers’ best defensive players.
The Packers don’t currently have a lot of cap space but could free up some room by cutting several players. They’ll also have more room if Aaron Jones, Corey Linsley, Jamaal Williams and Kevin King decide to sign with new teams in free agency. Baltimore Ravens +700
The Ravens are a solid option for Watt entering the 2021 season if he does not want to play with his brothers in Pittsburgh. If he played in Baltimore, he’d face his brothers twice per season and have the opportunity to compete for a championship.

Baltimore has made the playoffs the past three seasons and is coming off Lamar Jackson’s first playoff win as the franchise’s starter. With the Ravens on the rise, it’s no surprise they have solid odds to land Watt.
If he signed with the Ravens, Watt would bolster a defensive line that includes Calais Campbell, Brandon Williams and potentially Yannick Ngakoue returning. Dallas Cowboys +1000
Watt spoke about his love for Texas in his farewell video to the Texans. If he loves the state that much, then maybe he’d consider continuing his career for the other Texas franchise.
It’s not a secret that the Cowboys could use some help on defense. Dallas finished toward the bottom of the league in sacks. If Watt joined the Cowboys, he’d create a dynamic duo with DeMarcus Lawrence, who had 6.5 sacks in 2020.
While Jerry Jones would likely be willing to spend big to land Watt, Dallas still needs to figure out the Dak Prescott situation. Without a long-term deal, Prescott will likely play the 2021 campaign on the franchise tag. Still, this is a situation the Cowboys need to figure out quickly. If Prescott isn’t locked up to a long-term deal, he could leave the franchise in 2022.

Stephen A. Smith finally admits Tom Brady is the GOAT (Video)

Stephen A. Smith, ESPN. (Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports)MLB trade machine: Here’s how the Mets could acquire Matt Chapman by Mark PowellJorge Masvidal, Colby Covington as TUF coaches sounds like television drama gold on paper by Thomas Albano The debate is over, as Stephen A. Smith has to admit that Tom Brady is the GOAT.The GOAT conversation is over, according to Stephen A. Smith. That title belongs to Tom Brady, and Tom Brady alone. After his Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55, Brady has now won seven Lombardi Trophies. Brady is 7-3 all time in Super Bowls. While there was some talk Patrick Mahomes could usurp him at some point down the line, that is not happening. Brady has the head-to-head tiebreaker in their two previous postseason meetings. Even Smith gets it.No contrarian will be able to debate Tom Brady’s undisputed GOAT statusWith that seventh Super Bowl, Brady has ascended to a level only a few athletes have ever gotten to before. At the summit of the North American sports pantheon are Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps and Serena Williams, the very best at what they did/do. Mahomes simply does not have enough time to catch Brady at the NFL quarterback summit. While sports analysts like Smith have made careers with their lukewarm to scorching-hot takes, you cannot make an argument for a quarterback who is better than Brady, no matter how much you love Mahomes, John Elway or Joe Montana. The numbers do not add up to support any other signal-caller at this point in time. That could change potentially, but this debate is absolutely over.If Stephen A. Beneath the arduous amount of liquid courage summoned by avocado tequila, you could see an aging knee in pain. While NFL players have their knees scoped all the time in and out of season, Brady is closer to collecting social security than playing for Michigan. While mobility has never been part of Brady’s game, despite being a career 1,000-yard rusher, there is no need for him to rush back from a minor knee procedure for OTAs. Let Super Bowl champion backup Blaine Gabbert get all the first-team reps, because it really does not matter. Brady is The GOAT and he will hold that honor probably for the rest of time at quarterback. His knees might have been shaky on that boat, but it was a boat we all wished we could be on.

Report: Tom Brady, Odell Beckham Jr. ‘would love to play together’

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be loaded on offense next season if they simply bring back most of their key players, but is there a chance they could add another star receiver in the coming months? Tom Brady probably wouldn’t be opposed to it.
ESPN’s Jeff Darlington said on Thursday’s edition of “Get Up!” that Brady and Odell Beckham Jr. “would like to play together at some point.” He noted that Brady did not pitch Bucs general manager Jason Licht on the idea, but he and Beckham have gotten friendly over the years.
“I say this because I could see going into this offseason with Odell being in a situation where it feels like, perhaps, he is more expendable to the Browns than he was last year,” Darlington said. “Perhaps Jason Licht would take the call. But to all of these points, I’m also told they do really like where they stand with Chris Godwin, Mike Evans and Antonio Brown if they can bring him back. If something changes, though, that is the one I would be watching.”

The Bucs would probably only have room for Beckham if they do not re-sign Brown. Since Brady is the one who wanted Brown in Tampa Bay in the first place, many believe he will be back next season. Brady has taken Brown under his wing since the two were briefly teammates with the New England Patriots. Brown even lived with Brady at his Florida home for a while after the Bucs first signed the seven-time Pro Bowler.
There have been rumors that the Browns could trade Beckham since almost the moment they acquired him. Now that they made a nice postseason run after he went down with an injury, they may feel they don’t need him.
The Patriots reportedly pursued Beckham when Brady was still in New England. Brady and Beckham have even had some interactions on social media that sparked rumors of them teaming up. We wouldn’t rule out the Bucs making a run at OBJ this spring.

WATCH: Brady to Gronk trophy toss tops NFL Bucs’ boat parade party

Tom Brady tossed the Super Bowl trophy from his yacht onto teammate Rob Gronkowski’s boat on Wednesday as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers celebrated their NFL championship with a river parade.
Brady threw three touchdown passes, two to tight end Gronkowski, in Sunday’s 31-9 victory over Kansas City in Super Bowl 55 to capture his seventh career NFL crown — his first after 20 years with the New England Patriots.
“There were Duck Boats before but it was freezing cold. It was nothing like this,” Brady said in a telvision interview tweeted by the Bucs. “This is perfect.”
The 43-year-old quarterback had never enjoyed such a Super Bowl celebration in the cold-weather conditions of Boston, where land-and-sea Duck Boats could handle some nautical duty and excite Patriots fans.

This bash, however, was in warm and sunny conditions and followed a similar celebration by the Tampa Bay Lightning after last year’s National Hockey League championship.
“This is amazing. I’m loving it,” Brady said. “So happy for our team. Everyone gets to experience this. Very cool day.
“Is anyone working today? No way.”
As the parade on boats navigated its way along the Hillsborough River and the downtown waterfront — cheering an flag-waving supporters along the shore and on other boats kept at a social distance as music and horns blared and beverage sips were enjoyed by players aboard ships.

While Bucs coach Bruce Arians enjoyed the crowd from the front of his boat, Brady was at the back of his $2 million yacht with the Vince Lombardi Trophy the team accepted Sunday, the first club to win a Super Bowl at its home stadium.
Brady wore a T-shirt and black shorts with sunglasses and a backward cap.
With Gronkowski’s boat just behind his own, Brady took a few practice swings then made an underhanded lob and threw the championship trophy high in the air over the water and onto the boat of Gronkowski, where it was caught on the fly and hoisted into the air in a moment of joyful celebration.
