Light Heavyweight Prospect Johnny Walker Gives an Injury Update Following His Withdrawal From UFC 260

UFC light heavyweight, Johnny Walker, took to social media and provided an update to fans regarding his pectoral injury. The explosive Brazilian fighter underwent surgery on his torn pectoral muscle, following an injury he suffered during training. Walker was preparing for Jimmy Crute at UFC 260 however, reports came out a week ago that the fight was off. With the surgery behind him, Johnny Walker will place his focus solely on recovery and recuperation. It’s not clear when he will return, as this injury can result in an athlete being inactive for around 6-8 months. Anthony Smith stepped in on roughly a months’ notice to fill in for Johnny Walker and fight Crute at UFC 260. ‘Lionheart’ is no stranger to taking short notice appointments, and he’s sure to make the most out of a quick turnaround. As for Jimmy ‘the Brute’, he’s happy to have Smith as his new opponent who comes in as more experienced. UFC light heavyweight overview: Johnny Walker Johnny Walker went 1-1 in 2020, picking up a win in his last outing against Ryan Spann back in September. The victory snapped a two-fight skid and brought Walker back on track to eventually contest for gold. He was on a tear in the UFC with multiple blistering KO’s under his belt early on. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – SEPTEMBER 19: (L-R) Johnny Walker of Brazil punches Ryan Spann in their light heavyweight bout during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on September 19, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC)However, there are certain fundamental flaws that have been exposed in his game as of late in his recent fights. Chiefly, his defensive prowess leaves plenty to be desired, and he’s in for a rough night against a sniper of the opposite stance. However, he remains lethal in the clinch as was showcased in his fight against Khalil Rountree. Johnny Walker has all the attributes required to make a meaningful run towards the title in the 205-pound division. The weight class isn’t necessarily stacked, and it’s not impossible to come back after back-to-back losses. Not to mention, he’s got a flair to his striking offense, which always motivates the UFC to promote him. Fans hope this will be the case after he heals completely. UFC Vegas 19: Curtis Blaydes vs. Derrick Lewis live stream, start time & fight card

UFC Vegas 19: Curtis Blaydes vs. Derrick Lewis fight card, live stream & TV info.Top-5 heavyweights Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis are set to meet in the main event at UFC Vegas 19, with the winner inching that much closer to a shot at the title. The two were originally scheduled to headline UFC Vegas 15 in November, but a positive Covid-19 test for Blaydes forced the UFC to push the bout back a few months.Lewis is currently riding a three-fight winning streak, grabbing wins over the likes of Aleksei Oleinik, Ilir Latifi and Blagoy Ivanov. Lewis competed for the UFC heavyweight title back at UFC 230, but was defeated handily by champion Daniel Cormier.Blaydes, who has only lost twice in his 17-fight professional career, is seeking his first shot at the heavyweight strap. “Razor” has put together four-straight wins following a second loss to Francis Ngannou in 2018. Logically, Blaydes should be the next title contender should he defeat No. 4 Lewis, but if Ngannou is to defeat Miocic at UFC 260 or Jon Jones slides in, it could be a much longer wait for the Elevation Fight Team standout. Here is all of the broadcast information you need for UFC Vegas 19:Date: Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021Start Time: Prelims start at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT, Main Card starts at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PTLocation: Las Vegas, NVVenue: UFC ApexMain Card Live Stream: ESPN+Prelims Live Stream: ESPN+Full UFC Vegas 19: Curtis Blaydes vs. Derrick Lewis fight cardMain Card (ESPN+, 8 p.m. ET)Curtis Blaydes vs. Derrick LewisKetlen Vieira vs. Yana KunitskayaCharles Rosa vs. Darrick MinnerAleksei Oleinik vs. Chris DaukausAndrei Arlovski vs. Tom AspinallPreliminary Card (ESPN+, 5 p.m. ET)Phillip Hawes vs. Nassourdine ImavovJared Gordon vs. Danny ChavezDrakkar Klose vs. Luis PenaEddie Wineland vs. John CastanedaNate Landwehr vs. Julian ErosaShana Dobson vs. Casey O’NeillChas Skelly vs. Jamall EmmersAiemann Zahabi vs. Drako RodriguezSerghei Spivac vs. Jared VanderaaUFC Vegas 19 takes place on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021, live from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, NV. Kamaru Usman vs Georges St-Pierre: Who Has Fought Tougher Opponents in their UFC Runs?

UFC welterweight, Kamaru Usman, came out on top at UFC 258 and defended his strap for the third time. He’s now 4-0 in UFC title fights and is on the path towards sheer dominance across the sport of MMA. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ stopped Gilbert Burns in the third round following a well-timed stance-switched jab that stunned him. Following the victory, Usman entered lofty territory by surpassing Georges St-Pierre’s unbeaten streak at welterweight. He’s on a 13-fight win streak alongside names such as Jon Jones and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva is the only athlete to have 16 consecutive wins under his belt and is the current record holder. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – FEBRUARY 13: (L-R) Gilbert Burns of Brazil punches Kamaru Usman of Nigeria in their UFC welterweight championship fight during the UFC 258 event at UFC APEX on February 13, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Usman’s recent win has brought the GOAT debate under the microscope from fans and critics. Chiefly, only Georges St-Pierre can come in as a worthy contender for welterweight GOAT status and it’s easy to see why. Let’s take a look at their strength of schedules to determine who comes out on top. UFC head-to-head: Kamaru Usman vs Georges St-Pierre ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ is undoubtedly one of the most dominant forces to step foot in the cage. He’s never been knocked down or taken down and has out-landed every one of his UFC opponents thus far. Usman’s resume includes the who’s-who at welterweight, including former champions like Colby Covington (interim) and Rafael dos Anjos. Additionally, he’s scalped wins over Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards to clean out the top of the division. ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – JULY 12: Kamaru Usman of Nigeria celebrates after his victory over Jorge Masvidal in their UFC welterweight championship fight during the UFC 251 event at Flash Forum on UFC Fight Island on July 12, 2020 on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Usman’s currently holds wins over the top four highest-ranked welterweights in his world and has begun cleaning the division. Chiefly, the next name who he hasn’t faced and beaten is the number 5 ranked fighter in Stephen Thompson. The only thing going against him is that he’ll have to accrue another seven title defenses to truly eclipse St-Pierre’s record. Georges St-Pierre: Sustained greatness ‘GSP’ has only suffered two losses in his career, and he’s successfully avenged both his professional losses. As mentioned earlier, he accrued 9 title defenses and was also successful in cleaning out his entire division. Furthermore, ‘GSP’ also captured the middleweight title and joined the short-list of UFC champ-champs’. Some of his career highlights include victories over a prime Josh Koscheck, Carlos Condit, and Jon Fitch. Despite the fact that he began grinding out decisions more than statement finishes, his dominance over his generation of welterweights is virtually unmatched. Usman still has a way to go in that regard. NEW YORK, NY – NOVEMBER 04: Georges St-Pierre of Canada prepares to enter the Octagon prior to facing Michael Bisping of England in their UFC middleweight championship bout during the UFC 217 event inside Madison Square Garden on November 4, 2017 in New York City. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)Traditionally, GOAT status in a particular weight class comes in by performances in title fights as the main benchmark. Title fight victories and belts tend to stand the test of time and come in as a testament to longevity. In this regard, Usman has a long way to go, however, at 33 years of age, he’s on the path to surpass St-Pierre. Continue the conversation on the app, join other MMA fans on MMA Fans App

He captured the UFC welterweight gold at UFC 235  by dominating Tyron Woodley before retaining the title against Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal at UFC 245 and UFC 251, respectively.Burns, meanwhile, came in with a six-fight win streak and a 4-0 record since moving up to welterweight in 2019. After decision wins over Alexey Kunchenko and Gunnar Nelson in a two-month span that year, Burns made his case for a title shot with a first-round finish of Demian Maia and his own one-sided victory over Woodley.Usman and Burns were scheduled to face off at UFC 251 originally, but Burns was forced out of that fight due to a positive COVID-19 test.Fellow UFC fighters share their instant thoughts on Kamaru Usman’s winThe fight was a battle of blows from the beginning, as Burns rocked Usman very early on, but Usman recovered. Burns tried to get the fight to the ground, but Usman continuously kicked at Burns’ legs until he was forced to stand. The two traded big blows late in the round until the horn sounded.Usman was the one who wobbled Burns in the second, overwhelming the challenger with a barrage of strikes and looking like he’d bring the fight to a close at any point. Burns survived the round, but Usman grounded him and finished him early in the third for his third successful title defense.See how fellow fighters reacted to Usman retaining:Hell of a performance against a dog too. ‘It’s Not Done!’- Kamaru Usman Calls Out Jorge Masvidal for His Next Match

The main event at UFC 258 saw former teammates turned rivals, Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns, take each other on. Although the fight was not the most hyped for MMA fans, the matchup between ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ and ‘Durinho’ was a mouth-watering prospect.  Going into the bout, there was a lot of talk about what both men had taken away from years of sparring together and how they would be able to use it come fight night. Under Hooft, both Burns and Usman had added striking to their already vast arsenal.  The fight did not start off well for the champion, who was rocked in the first round and was in big trouble. However, he proved his championship mettle once again by weathering the early onslaught. He hurt Gilbert in the second round and ended the fight in the third round with a beautiful jab. The ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ claimed he had been working on the jab a lot after his coach, Trevor Wittman, had encouraged him.  Kamaru Usman beats Georges-St Pierre for the most consecutive wins at welterweight After the fight in his interview with Joe Rogan, Usman called out a rival for his recent comments on social media.  The UFC welterweight champion said, “We got this little street thug, calling himself a Jesus, thinking he’s Jesus. And you know, Joe, we tried to make that fight several times… but he kept backing out. The only reason this man took the fight is because it was on six days’ notice.” The welterweight champion continued, “And he had a built-in excuse, and he’s still running his mouth. Talking about he broke my nose and stepping in on six days. Give you three weeks, he’s going to do something. Guess what? It’s not done. I’ll give you a whole training camp. I guarantee you, you won’t sign on that dotted line.” ‘Gamebred’ recently tweeted that he would ‘take off’ Kamaru Usman’s head with a full training camp. The comments have not sat well with the champion, who beat Masvidal in a dominant display at UFC 251. What did you make of Kamaru Usman’s performance tonight? If the UFC books this rematch, do you think a full training camp for ‘Gamebred’ would result in a different outcome? Gilbert Burns, Kamaru Usman, Latest Sports Stories, UFC, UFC 258, welterweight

Kamaru Usman extends UFC reign with Gilbert Burns knockout

Photo from UFC (@UFC) Twitter
American Kamaru Usman blasted away challenger Gilbert Burns on Saturday and extended his seemingly impregnable reign at the top of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight division with a third-round knockout at UFC 258 in Las Vegas.
“This is my cage,” Usman said afterward. “I’m the undisputed welterweight champion for a reason. I am the best on the planet for a reason. I’m here to stay.”

“Whole ‘nother savage.” 🏆 @Usman84kg #UFC258 pic.twitter.com/iXhj2afbw5
— UFC (@ufc) February 14, 2021

The bout started with the Brazilian Burns rushing the champion in the center of the cage, landing a huge right to the temple with a minute gone that left Usman wobbling.

PUT SOME RESPECT ON HIS NAME 🏆 #UFC258 pic.twitter.com/FurU7SY99x
— UFC (@ufc) February 14, 2021

But Usman dusted himself off, his rapier-like left jab found its mark, and the champion found his range with some massive rights of his own before the TKO was called with 34 seconds of the third round gone.
It was a straight right that put Burns on his back then, and Usman rained down the blows before referee Herb Dean made the call.
“He caught me in the first round,” said Usman. “I thought: ‘Let’s go to work now’.”

Varsity status. #UFC258 pic.twitter.com/sxvEWKXveJ
— UFC (@ufc) February 14, 2021

The victory took his lifetime record to 18-1, and the 33-year-old dubbed the “Nigerian Nightmare” is now 13-0 in the UFC — the longest active winning streak across all divisions in the world’s leading mixed martial arts promotion.
It is also the longest-ever winning streak for a welterweight in the UFC, surpassing the 12-0 by Canada’s former champ Georges St-Pierre, arguably the greatest fighter the sport has seen.
Saturday’s effort showcased the skill set that has taken Usman to the top.
Burns came to MMA after winning multiple world titles in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and Usman looked to keep the action standing.
Burns had said coming into the fight that he had developed the power to match Usman on his feet and the first blow backed the claim.
But a slip then found the Brazilian on his back and Usman used the time to recover, recalibrate, and then come out with all guns blazing.

Saturday’s 10-fight card was the first pay-per-view event the UFC has hosted at its Las Vegas headquarters this year, after its UFC 257 card was staged inside the “Fight Island” complex in Abu Dhabi last month.
The UFC’s Apex facility in Las Vegas remains fan-free –- with strict protocols being enforced — as the United States continues to struggle with the coronavirus pandemic.
