Outdoor House Lighting – How to Transform Your Home

Outdoor House Lighting is lighting that you install on, or aim directly at, your house. Outdoor Lighting is any lighting installed outside the home and includes garden and patio lighting for instance. In this article we will look at how the use of outdoor house lighting can transform the appearance of your home and give it added security in the process.

For many people outside lights are just a simple wall light or lantern above the door of the house but with the range of fittings available today and the reasonable expense involved, so much more is possible. Clever use of outdoor lighting can have a stunning effect on the appearance of any home and so do not think this is limited to larger homes. Let’s look at a few ideas:

The Old Favourite.

The standard use of a light above or beside the front door is still a great idea, however try to stay away from those old lanterns or industrial looking spotlights. The purpose of these lights is essentially to ease your entry into the house, and help you to find your keys! There are some great designs of lights available for this purpose, nice chrome down-lights are a favourite.

Light Up Your House.

Instead of having your lights on the wall, place spotlights or floodlights in front of the house and point them strategically at the house. You will have seen this technique used on large public buildings but it is really effective even on the smaller home, just be careful not to go over the top with super powered spots. Spotlights placed high on the walls pointing downwards can also look great.

Lights Around The House.

A great idea is to fit down-lights in the fascia boards around the exterior of the house. Make sure the lights are designed for external use as they will be exposed to the elements. Space them out well, the idea is to give a light effect.

Outdoor house lighting has added safety and security benefits. Burglars do not like well lit up areas they prefer to work in the dark. Add motion sensors that will switch the lights on when anyone approaches the house. For your own safety a little light around the house will help to avoid trips and falls.

Adding lights to the outside of your home has become a lot less costly in recent years and the choice of fittings is amazing but always be aware of the dangers of electricity. Outdoor house lighting should always be fitted by a competent expert, do not try to save money in this area. Let your imagination run wild and make your home stand out – at least in the dark!
